What’s in the Water? – Check Dams in Setter/Stephens Drain

The Miner Lake Improvement Board has been continuing its efforts on behalf of the lake residents and Allegan Township. In response to concerns about fertilizer runoff from local farms, the board has studied and approved plans to install a series of check dams in the Setter/Stephens drain located at the northwest corner of Miner Lake.

These check dams are constructed of stone and are designed to slow the movement of water and sediment into the lake. Water will still pass over the check dams, but sediment and the associated fertilizers will collect behind the dams and not enter the lake. As part of the agreement with the land owners adjacent to the drain, they will be allowed to collect this sediment and replace washed areas of their fields.

We are excited about this win/win outcome and are pleased to have a part in further protecting Miner Lake.
