The rain over the last couple days, along with the possibility of rain in the days ahead, has increased concerns about possible soil erosion and flooding. It appears the lake level has risen about 12 inches in the last few days and, although it will go down, the possible damage caused in the interim is a concern.

I have contacted the Allegan County Drain Commissioner (Becky Rininger) and requested that they assist us by allowing additional water to leave the lake for a few days. She has agreed to send a crew out to assess the options for getting the excess water away from the lake. There are a couple of drains downstream that appear to be limiting the flow of water out of the lake. They will be assessed and if improvements are required we will ask the drain commissioner to act. We will be following-up with her office throughout the coming week.

Until the lake return to a more normal level, we are asking that you be considerate of the amount of wake you produce. Fluctuations in the lake level are a normal part of being on a lake, but the possible damage from erosion can effect more than just an individual home owner.

Finally, if you are in a area that has a septic system that is “low or near the water table” please consider limiting you use and discharge of water for a few days until the surface water recedes. The increased surface water only increases that chances that your system is not functioning as designed. Additional water in yards or in the area of drain fields could result in waste water being introduced into the lake.

Thank you for you help and consideration with this matter! and keep an eye out for loose or floating sections of dock.
